Face Moisturiser Facts

Face Moisturiser Facts

We have answered and a few typical questions, covering all things moisturiser!

What is the best product for the face to use in the morning?

If you only want to use one skincare product in the morning, we recommend using your favourite natural moisturiser. First you should be washing your face with cool water, not too cold and not too hot, and then pat dry with a clean cotton cloth. While the skin is still slightly damp, apply the moisturiser. This will lock the moisture on the skin and protect it from the elements.

At what age should I start using skin care products like moisturisers?

Teenagers may like to start using gentle cleansers and moisturisers, but try not to overload the skin unnecessary. We recommended to start introducing a routine of applying moisturisers, serums, toners etc from the age of 20-25, as this is when the skin starts to reduce collagen production.

Do I need to use a serum and a moisturiser?

You do not have to use both, but we suggest you use a moisturiser in the morning and if your skin is particularly dry, add a few drops of serum to help hydrate the skin. You can use the serum right before applying the moisturiser, to help it penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. Whether to use a moisturiser only, or a serum as well, also depends on the weather condition and environmental exposure which may well mean you will need to use both.

At night, avoid using a moisturiser. Instead, use a good oil-based serum to deeply hydrate and rebalance the skin whilst you sleep. The oils penetrate deeper than a moisturiser as well as the skin breathes better without it.

Do I really need to moisturise the skin?

We would recommend that you do use a moisturiser, as it really provides the skin of much needed nutrients (vitamins, fatty acids, etc.). The moisturiser will overtime improve your skin’s elasticity and complexion, ensuring it feels and looks healthy and maintains a natural glow.

Can I have clean and healthy skin without using a moisturiser or face oil?

No, we recommend to use either a moisturiser, face oil, or both regularly if you want to achieve healthy skin. It is very important to moisturise the skin as this will result in its ability to hold in extra moisture during the day, which will act as protection from the elements, as well as indoor heating and cooling systems.

A face oil or serum in the evening will help regulate sebum production and give the skin the extra botanical actives in needs. However, always use products that are suitable for your skin type.

How many times a day should I moisturise?

We recommend that you use a moisturiser at least one time a day in the morning, and at a maximum three times a day. If you have extremely dry skin, or after you have had a shower or physical exercise, you will need to wash your face and re-apply the moisturiser to keep your skin feeling and looking supple. However, if you constantly apply the moisturiser or other products, your skin will become overwhelmed and reliant on being fed, which will interfere with your own natural hydration. It is all about balance!

How long does the moisturiser last on the face?

The moisturiser can last between a few hours to a whole day depending on the ingredients in the product and the current state of your skin. Some ingredients will sustain the moisturiser’s humectant properties on your skin for longer than others. Humectants are ingredients that will attract water molecules to the skin, so will keep it hydrated for a longer period. An example of these is glycerine. Emulsifiers are also used in moisturisers, and these might also have the ability to prolong their hydration rate.

Different moisturisers contain different humectants, emulsifiers, and oils. You should find the one that suit your skin the best.

I have an old expired moisturiser: can I use it?

No, we do not recommend to use an expired moisturiser, as this will not be at its optimum freshness, and the performance will not be as good.

Moisturisers contain preservatives, and these ensure that the product lasts for as long as it is written on the packaging. After the expiry date, the preservatives might not work as well, and the product could have also become spoiled, which may cause irritation to the skin if used. If you are not aware that your product could have expired, as the expiry date might not be printed on the packaging (see our article on expiry dates of products here), and after using it, you notice redness, then promptly wash your face with a soap or cleanser, and seek medical advice if the redness does not go away.

Is it good to moisturise every day?

Yes, absolutely! You will notice a visible difference when you maintain your skin hydrated and nourished daily with the use of a moisturiser.

Often check if your skin feels dry, tight, or pulling with your facial expressions, all of which will be signs of dehydrated skin and you will need to moisturise it again.

How do I keep my skin hydrated?

Drink water throughout the day, (see our article with more depth information on how to stay hydrated here). A great way to ensure your skin stays hydrated is to use a floral water, so try our AcquaDiRosa Balancing Mist. You can keep the travel size in your bag and spray it directly on the skin when you feel you need to refresh! It also moistens the skin on the face and preps it right before the application of the moisturiser.

Which moisturiser does Terre Verdi offer?

We offer our NeroliPom Moisturiser, which contains all-natural (100% natural) humectants, emulsifiers, oils, and preservatives. It is certified organic by the Soil Association COSMOS. It contains soothing aloe vera, gentle camellia oil, antioxidant-rich pomegranate, and hydrating vitamin E. The olive-based emulsifier contained in it increases the hydration rate by many times, holding more water on the skin, and making it last for a longer period compared to conventional moisturisers.
